Abstract

Concept analysis is a strategy that examines the attributes or characteristics of a concept. Its basic purpose is to distinguish between the defining and irrelevant attributes of a concept similarities. It is an excellent way to begin examining information in preparation for research or theory construction and results in an operational definition and a list of defining attributes and antecedents.
In this paper, the concept selected for analysis was powerlessness. The concepts of Helplessness and powerlessness have riot been clearly distinguished from each other. The aims of the concept analysis of powerlessness were to clarify the meaning of powerlessness, to develop an operational definition for it.
The process of concept analysis is illustrated and documented using the analytic approach described by Walker and Avant(1988).

The concept of powerlessness can be defined as follows : Power- lessness is a perception that one¢¥s own actions will not significantly affect an outcome perceived lack of control over current situation or immediate happening.

The attributes of powerlessness were as follows

1) Feeling subjectively perceived only in one¢¥s own position, but not continual or reiterative.
2) Some outer circumstances are anticipated as causing factors.
3) The lack of physiological, psychological, environmental control comes
together.
4) A perceived behavior change is followed. 5) The lack of expectations is concerned..

Antecedents of powerlessness consist of the facts below.

1) Etiological factor
2) The loss of controls
- the loss of physical control
- the loss of psychological control - the loss of envionmental control
3) The lack of knowledge

Consequences occuring as a result of powerlessness consist of the facts below.
1) Physiological responces ; fatigue, dizziness, headache, stomach upset, food denial, dehydration, incresed blood pressure, weight loss
2);Vervalization of feeling no control over situation or outcome
? Expressions of dissatisfaction and frustration over inability to perform previous tasks and/or activities
3) Perceived behavior responces ; inability to seek information regarding care, frustration, non facial expression, passivity, withdrawal, guilty, helplessness

It was suggested that the study of this concept should be continued so as to develop the operational definitions that can be observed at the empirical references and to develop the nursing interven- tions and measurement tools to apply for the practice.
